Al-Hasan Al-Basry – Asking for Forgiveness

Saturday

O Lord, I beg You to forgive every sin that distracted me away from what You guided me to, or ordered me to do, or forbade me from doing or directed me to do; which would have included benefit and reaching Your acceptance and following Your love and preferring Your closeness,…so please O Lord, send prayers, greetings and blessings upon Sayyidina Mohammed and the family of Sayyidina Mohammed and forgive them, O Best Forgiver.

O Lord, I beg You to forgive every sin I forgot but You counted, and I neglected but You documented, and I boasted about but You concealed, and if I had repented You would have forgiven,…so please O Lord, send prayers, greetings and blessings upon Sayyidina Mohammed and the family of Sayyidina Mohammed and forgive them, O Best Forgiver.

O Lord, I beg You to forgive every sin that made me expect Your immediate punishment, but You deferred it and blessed me with concealment that I easily blew,…so please O Lord, send prayers, greetings and blessings upon Sayyidina Mohammed and the family of Sayyidina Mohammed and forgive them, O Best Forgiver.

O Lord, I beg You to forgive every sin You forbade but I disobeyed You, and You warned of but I did not heed, and You showed the ugliness of but my inner self beautified it to me,…so please O Lord, send prayers, greetings and blessings upon Sayyidina Mohammed and the family of Sayyidina Mohammed and forgive them, O Best Forgiver.

O Lord, I beg You to forgive every sin that dismisses Your Mercy, or brings down Your wrath, or prevents Your Grace, or removes Your favors,…so please O Lord, send prayers, greetings and blessings upon Sayyidina Mohammed and the family of Sayyidina Mohammed and forgive them, O Best Forgiver.

O Lord, I beg You to forgive every sin by which I altered or annoyed any of Your people,…so please O Lord, send prayers, greetings and blessings upon Sayyidina Mohammed and the family of Sayyidina Mohammed and forgive them, O Best Forgiver.

O Lord, I beg You to forgive every sin I repented, then went back to doing, and was ashamed of You while doing and feared You, yet continued and went back to,…so please O Lord, send prayers, greetings and blessings upon Sayyidina Mohammed and the family of Sayyidina Mohammed and forgive them, O Best Forgiver.

O Lord, I beg You to forgive every sin that angered You at me, and for everything I should have done because of a pledge I made or a promise I made then broke for no reason other than my arrogance,…so please O Lord, send prayers, greetings and blessings upon Sayyidina Mohammed and the family of Sayyidina Mohammed and forgive them, O Best Forgiver.

O Lord, I beg You to forgive every sin I was able to commit because of a grace You bestowed upon me, but which I used in disobeying You and violating Your orders and disregarding Your warnings,…so please O Lord, send prayers, greetings and blessings upon Sayyidina Mohammed and the family of Sayyidina Mohammed and forgive them, O Best Forgiver.

O Lord, I beg You to forgive every sin during which I preferred my lust to obeying You, and preferred what I love over Your order, so I satisfied my inner self by angering You and subjected it to Your punishment, for You had prohibited and and notified, and warned to hold me accountable. For this I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You,…so please O Lord, send prayers, greetings and blessings upon Sayyidina Mohammed and the family of Sayyidina Mohammed and forgive them, O Best Forgiver.

The Republic of Beauty, Melding West and East

30veni6001

Venice and the Islamic World, 828-1797 This 1511 painting in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s exhibition shows the reception of Venetian ambassadors in Damascus.

Told often enough that the West and Islam are natural enemies, we start to believe it, and assume it has always been so. But the Metropolitan Museum of Art argues otherwise in “Venice and the Islamic World, 828-1797,” a show that, with classic Met largesse, recreates the spectacle of two different cultures meeting in one fantastic city, where commerce and love of beauty, those great levelers, unite them in a fruitful bond.
